For 24 years Distant Journeys has specialized in offering hiking trips along some of Europe’s most classic and well-loved, long distance routes. In partnership with Distant Journeys, FitTrips of Maine gets hikers ready. Sarah MacColl and LIz Bradford have enjoyed the thousands of hours they’ve spent teaching step aerobics and working in their private gyms with clients of all ages. However, the most rewarding aspect of fitness training is when it helps clients successfully reach goals. An upcoming hiking trip is one of the best motivators to get fit or fitter.  But how fit do you need to be? Where do you start?

If you are considering traveling with a Distant Journeys group or using their self-guided services for one of their international destinations, we can provide you with several simple fitness assessments to help you determine what you’ll need to do to get ready.

Most of you who have found your way to this website are likely from Southern Maine, and if you’ve ever been interested in backpacking in Europe, here’s another reason to do it!  You can ”buy local”.  Julie Head, founder (with Andrea Ellison Mulla) and owner of Distant Journeys, lives in South Portland.  This fall, we are offering a trip to Western Maine. But I highly recommend Switzerland.  Or France. Or Italy.
